Performance and Sport Science Fellowship

Overview:
The Appalachian League is seeking qualified candidates for Performance and Sport Science Fellowship positions. Fellows will be assigned to one of the League’s teams, reporting to the League Coordinator for sport science and research initiatives.
League Background:
Founded in 1937, the Appalachian League is a collegiate summer league focused on player development, providing current college athletes the opportunity to compete in a technology enhanced, development-focused environment. With eight teams across Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, the League emphasizes player growth through quality facilities, scouting technology, and streamlined travel. Over 80 players from the League have signed with MLB organizations since 2020. More information on the league can be found here.
Fellowship Details:
- Timeline: June 1 – July 31
- Compensation: Monthly stipend, housing, and meal per diem for travel Key Responsibilities:
- Collect and ensure accuracy of physical performance data using technologies such as marker less motion capture, accelerometers, and dynamometers.
- Facilitate monthly assessments with deployment teams, working directly with athletes and staff.
- Maintain safety protocols during testing and monitoring.
- Manage, capture, analyze, and communicate performance data while upholding confidentiality and ethical standards.
- Assist with maintaining athlete management systems and sport science equipment. • Led daily team and individual warm up.
- Facilitate players receiving and performing individualized corrective exercise programs based on assessment results.
Required Qualifications:
- Rising senior or bachelor’s degree in sports science, exercise science, biomechanics, data science, or related fields.
- Relevant experience with team sport or tactical athletes, such as:
o Strength and conditioning
o Rehabilitation (e.g., sports medicine)
o Sports analytics or performance monitoring
o Applied physiology or biomechanics research
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Sheets.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Current CPR/AED certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate student, or advanced degree, in a relevant sport and performance field. • Certifications such as NSCA-CSCS or NSCA-CPSS, or licensure as ATC or PT. • Experience in baseball/softball or collegiate athletics.
- Familiarity with sport science technologies.
- Bilingual (Spanish proficiency).
- Strong interest in sport science careers, especially roles in professional baseball or team sports (e.g., Performance Scientist, Strength and Conditioning Coach, Athletic Trainer, or Registered Dietitian).
